Trapit Bansal is an accomplished artificial intelligence (AI) researcher known for his work in natural language processing, deep learning, and meta-learning. He gained prominence for his contributions at OpenAI and is currently in the Meta Superintelligence Labs team. [1]
Trapit Bansal has conducted extensive research in artificial intelligence, with a focus on reinforcement learning (RL) and natural language processing (NLP). From January 2022 to June 2025, he served as a Member of Technical Staff at OpenAI, where he co-led the RL for reasoning initiative and co-developed the O1 project. He collaborated closely with Ilya Sutskever, Lukasz Kaiser, and Jakub Pachocki.
Prior to this, Bansal was a Graduate Research Assistant at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (2015–2021), focusing on deep learning methods for NLP. He also held multiple research internships, including at Microsoft Research (2020), Google (2018), OpenAI (2017), Facebook (2016), and the Indian Institute of Science (2013–2015), working on topics ranging from knowledge graphs to Bayesian modeling.
Earlier in his career, he worked as an analyst at Accenture Management Consulting (2012–2013), contributing to supply chain strategy for global clients. During his academic tenure, Bansal undertook internships at several prominent technology companies, including IISc Bengaluru, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI.
In July 2025, Bansal announced his departure from OpenAI and his move to Meta Superintelligence Labs. He shared the news on Twitter, expressing his enthusiasm for the new role. TechCrunch described Bansal as "a highly influential OpenAI researcher," highlighting the significance of his move to Meta as a major progression in his AI career [1] [3]
Trapit Bansal received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (2015–2021), where he also earned an M.S. in Computer Science (2015–2019). He previously completed an integrated M.Sc. in Mathematics and Statistics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (2007–2012). [1] [2]
