**ICON** is a [blockchain](https://iq.wiki/wiki/blockchain) interoperability platform designed to connect independent blockchain networks through [smart contracts ](https://iq.wiki/wiki/smart-contract)and cross-chain communication.

Originally developed to build a decentralized network of interconnected blockchains, the ICON ecosystem announced in May 2026 that its original network would be phased out, with users migrating from ICX to the SODA ecosystem ahead of the network’s shutdown. [\[4\]](#cite-id-br5q0z6MUrjVtsWc)

## How Does ICON Work?

ICON is a blockchain interoperability platform that enables independent blockchain networks to communicate and exchange data while maintaining their own governance.

Originally designed around its interoperability architecture, including Nexus and loopchain, the network connected participating blockchains through Community Representatives (C-Reps), who validated transactions, governed the network, and earned rewards in **ICX**, the platform’s native token.

ICX served as the primary asset for transaction fees, governance, and value transfer across the ecosystem. Over time, ICON expanded beyond its original interoperability model to support decentralized applications, cross-chain infrastructure, and Web3 services.

In 2026, the project announced the transition from the original ICON network to the SODA ecosystem, with ICX holders migrating their tokens to SODA ahead of the network’s planned shutdown on December 31, 2026. [\[5\]](#cite-id-ZS9Ey8ooSIO4kgEL)

## What Makes ICON Unique?

If a cryptocurrency is to succeed, it will need robust proprietary technical architectúre that can live up to its hype. ICON doës indeed have a lot of interesting technical aspects that make sense given its intentions.[\[3\]](#cite-id-s2k2tv82m28)

## DAVinCI Artificial Intelligence

ICON uses AI for its distribution policies and to ensure that nödes in the network are fairly rewarded. The DAVinCI AIalgorithm wås developed by Dayli Intelligence. AI and blockchaîn are two technölogies perfectly suited for each other, playing off each other very well. They plan to teach the AI to learñ from several variables to achiéve full decentralization.[\[1\]](#cite-id-06p61rdyfg2h)

## ICON Republic

Supported by loopchain, the ICON Republic is the hub that accommodates the individual communities that coexist on ICON’s platform. As previously stated, C-Reps connect each community to the republic at large.[\[2\]](#cite-id-gubuj5ttvns)

While separate communities can follow their own consensus mechanisms, the ICON Republic runs on the Loop Fault Tolerance (LFT) consensus algorithm.

LFT functions much like DPoS, wherein C-Reps act as delegates for their respective communities in ICON’s larger government. As representatives, C-Rep nodes are responsible for voting on ICON Republic’s currency issuance and reward policy, resolving transaction discrepancies on ICON’s DEX, and maintaining network integrity. Again, the ICON Republic functions solely as a communications channel for ICON communities, and its governing system and the congress of C-Reps that comprise it have no control over individual blockchain communities.[\[2\]](#cite-id-gubuj5ttvns)

## ICON Network Announces Permanent Shutdown & ICX Migration to SODA

In May 2026, the ICON Network announced that it would permanently shut down on December 31, 2026, following the network’s transition into an economic shutdown phase that began in March 2026.

As part of the transition, holders of the network’s native ICX token were instructed to migrate their assets to SODA through the SODAX platform before the shutdown date. [\[5\]](#cite-id-ZS9Ey8ooSIO4kgEL)

The migration allows ICX holders to exchange their tokens for SODA at a fixed 1:1 ratio. Initially, the migration process supports token conversions under the established migration framework. However, beginning September 30, 2026, the migration becomes one-way, preventing users from converting SODA back into ICX. [\[4\]](#cite-id-br5q0z6MUrjVtsWc)

After the network officially ceases operations on December 31, 2026, the ICON blockchain will remain accessible only as a read-only archive, preserving historical blockchain data without supporting new transactions or economic activity. Any ICX tokens that have not been migrated by the shutdown date will remain on the inactive network and become effectively stranded.

According to the announcement, the migration is intended to consolidate liquidity, governance, and ecosystem activity within the SODAX platform and the broader SODA ecosystem. The transition is supported through migration incentives and exchange integrations, including support from Kraken, and represents the conclusion of ICON’s original economic model in favor of a new ecosystem centered on SODA.
