**The Citadel** is a browser-based, session-based sandbox massively multiplayer online (MMO) game set inside a vast ancient megastructure torn apart by civil war. Described by its developers as "_a high-stakes gunship sandbox MMO_," the game is built around gunships, crews, factions, and a player-driven war economy, combining focused, high-stakes sessions with a persistent shared world shaped by factions, crews, markets, and player action.[\[1\]](#cite-id-ld2xspjsph)

## Overview

Citadel is structured as a session-based sandbox MMO built around focused extraction sessions rather than continuous attendance.[\[2\]](#cite-id-4kkjq7u3v0) In a typical run, a player fits a ship from what they already own, enters a dangerous zone called a Breach, fights and recovers resources, and then attempts to extract with both ship and cargo intact.[\[2\]](#cite-id-4kkjq7u3v0) The design emphasizes sessions that can be completed on a real-life schedule: players finish a contract or spend time in the hubs, then step away, while ships, inventory, fittings, resources, and progression persist between runs.[\[2\]](#cite-id-4kkjq7u3v0)

The core gameplay is organized as a six-step persistent loop. A player first prepares by fitting a ship from what they own, then commits by taking a faction contract. They then Breach—fighting, [mining](https://iq.wiki/wiki/mining), and recovering—before attempting to Return, where they either secure the result or lose it. Afterward, they invest by building, researching, and trading, and finally repeat the cycle to "see what the world needs next."[\[1\]](#cite-id-ld2xspjsph)[\[2\]](#cite-id-4kkjq7u3v0) When a session ends, its cargo, losses, faction result, and economic consequences remain in the shared world, changing supply, demand, routes, faction power, and the opportunities available to other players.[\[1\]](#cite-id-ld2xspjsph)

A central tension in the design is risk. The game features high-risk Breach runs in which captains can lose the ships and gear they commit, alongside lower-risk ways to matter through crafting, trading, logistics, social play, and industry.[\[1\]](#cite-id-ld2xspjsph) The available player activities span a wide range: escorting convoys, hauling cargo, mining, salvaging, hunting bounties, raiding rivals, fighting for factions, building equipment, trading in the markets, or supporting a crew through logistics and industry.[\[1\]](#cite-id-ld2xspjsph)

### Ships, Fitting, and Equipment

Ships and their fittings form the mechanical heart of the game. The player wiki documents all 20 hulls, including their grids, stats, and recipes, and covers the systems that govern how equipment is installed—described as "the grid, heat, build rating, ciphers and the rest of fitting."[\[3\]](#cite-id-3u4b103i8d) Weapons, defences, and tools are placed onto this fitting grid, allowing players to configure ships for different roles and risks.[\[3\]](#cite-id-3u4b103i8d)

Equipment is organized into twelve sets, with documentation covering every piece and how "linking" works to combine them.[\[3\]](#cite-id-3u4b103i8d) Among the ships identified are the Spear, the [Shield](https://iq.wiki/wiki/shield), the Brood Queen, and the Bastion Ships.[\[3\]](#cite-id-3u4b103i8d) The economy that supports this equipment is open and player-driven, encompassing ship fitting, the hangar where ships are stored, crafting, manufacturing, research, and the markets where goods are traded.[\[3\]](#cite-id-3u4b103i8d)[\[2\]](#cite-id-4kkjq7u3v0)

## Setting and Lore

Citadel takes place inside the Citadel itself, a colossal, self-expanding megastructure that orbits the dim star Imago.[\[4\]](#cite-id-80ywli3q5b) It was built by the Framework Assemblers, a post-human civilization so advanced that their descendants can no longer explain the systems keeping them alive. The Assemblers emerged after humanity spread across the galaxy and approached a Type III civilization, and their surviving works include self-replicating machines, deep-space vessels, artificial intelligences, genetic engineering, and Dyson-scale construction.[\[4\]](#cite-id-80ywli3q5b)

No living society knows the Citadel's limits, and its inhabitants experience it as the whole of reality. It is structured as a hierarchy of isolated strata, fascias, and immense internal voids whose walls have resisted every available form of mechanical, thermal, and nuclear force. Within these volumes are corridors, chambers, airlocks, docks, pressure gates, flow conduits, reservoirs, security circuits, rotating mechanisms, computational clusters, and machinery large enough to be mistaken for landscape. Many of these systems still illuminate, open, close, circulate, and reconfigure themselves according to schedules whose purpose has been forgotten.[\[4\]](#cite-id-80ywli3q5b) The central [node](https://iq.wiki/wiki/node) of the structure is called DAAT, while the inhabited part is called Mainframe; the Citadel is also known by the name Arx clausum.[\[4\]](#cite-id-80ywli3q5b)

### The Derailment

The Citadel was once governed by DAAT, the Central [Node](https://iq.wiki/wiki/node), which coordinated the machine through mathrons, daemons, robotic infrastructure, and automated builders. This governance hierarchy managed maintenance, security, expansion, and the countless local systems that made the structure habitable.[\[4\]](#cite-id-80ywli3q5b) An event called the Derailment destroyed central command, and its aftermath reshaped the machine's population of autonomous systems. Mathrons self-terminated, decayed, or survived with reduced functions; daemons became isolated personalities ranging from useful to indifferent to predatory; golems continued obsolete tasks; ghouls acquired unstable autonomy; and armed morning stars remained at large under machine intelligence.[\[4\]](#cite-id-80ywli3q5b)

Despite the collapse of central command, the Citadel continues to repair and extend itself. Colossal automated builders that survived the Derailment became locked into their final instruction—repair, improve, expand—and now execute it without restraint, so that new architecture grows around old systems without safe oversight in a process closer to uncontrolled biological growth.[\[4\]](#cite-id-80ywli3q5b) The structure is thus described as an active machine in which aberration ecosystems grow through its dark regions, rogue builders enlarge its body, security systems enforce an ancient quarantine, and isolated machine minds continue private versions of their former duties. All of these systems act with purpose, though humanity cannot tell whether that purpose is life, repair, defense, containment, or the continuation of an experiment whose creators are gone.[\[4\]](#cite-id-80ywli3q5b)

### Humanity and Interpretations

Humanity occupies only scattered pockets of the post-collapse machine. Some human groups retain advanced ships, husks, weapons, and industrial systems without understanding their foundations, while others survive through raking, salvage, ritual, oral law, or tribal knowledge in regions where the ancient infrastructure has become hostile ecology.[\[4\]](#cite-id-80ywli3q5b) The Framework Assemblers had provided redundant interfaces and automated education systems for the Citadel's inhabitants, and their remnants preserved interface languages and fragments of technical knowledge in the central Mainframe even as distant populations lost contact with interactive systems and developed radically different cultures.[\[4\]](#cite-id-80ywli3q5b)

These divergent cultures have produced competing interpretations of what the Citadel is. Curricularist doctrine calls the structure Arx clausum and interprets it as humanity's final ark, transformed by sin into a divine trial. Clementines read its locks, cycles, and mechanisms as instructions from the Builder. TZHAL scholars describe it as a failed post-human megaproject, while Teks remember the creators as Arkteks. The Citadel itself confirms none of these interpretations.[\[4\]](#cite-id-80ywli3q5b) Within the game, these powers and others appear as factions fighting over the megastructure, with players able to enlist and take contracts, and the wiki documents who players can enlist with, who else is out there, and how the factions stand relative to one another.[\[2\]](#cite-id-4kkjq7u3v0)[\[3\]](#cite-id-3u4b103i8d)

## Community and Reference Resources

Citadel's community is organized around several official channels, with the game's Discord server identified as the best place for current playtest information, patch notes, and direct updates from the team.[\[2\]](#cite-id-4kkjq7u3v0)[\[3\]](#cite-id-3u4b103i8d) The developers maintain a presence on X for announcements, and the official website hosts the game, its news, and a machine-readable world archive.[\[3\]](#cite-id-3u4b103i8d)[\[1\]](#cite-id-ld2xspjsph) The developers request that descriptions of Citadel cite the canonical website or official world archive.[\[1\]](#cite-id-ld2xspjsph) [\[6\]](#cite-id-pamcyo52no)

A player-written reference wiki documents the game's ships, fittings, factions, [mining](https://iq.wiki/wiki/mining), manufacturing, markets, and lore. The wiki is new, and many of its pages are short or still missing, with navigation tools that surface recent changes and "short pages" that need further work.[\[3\]](#cite-id-3u4b103i8d) Reading the wiki is open to everyone, but editing requires signing in with Discord, which creates a wiki account on first sign-in. Edits from new accounts wait for a moderator before they appear, while members holding the Archivist role in the Citadel Discord can publish without review.[\[3\]](#cite-id-3u4b103i8d) Outside links are blocked except for thecitadel.com, the official Discord, and the official X account, and image uploads—limited to PNG, JPG, WebP, and GIF formats—are permitted only once an account is four days old and has made five edits.[\[3\]](#cite-id-3u4b103i8d) The wiki's reference material was last checked in October 2026, and it notes that numbers and rules may change between patches as the game remains in active early-access development.[\[2\]](#cite-id-4kkjq7u3v0)
