Career

Dickerson began his legal career with internships and clerkships, including positions at Yale University in 2003 and the Office of the General Counsel of the U.S. Department of the Air Force in 2004. Following his legal education, he worked as an associate at O'Melveny & Myers LLP from 2005 to 2008 and at Kirkland & Ellis LLP from 2008 to 2010, where he practiced law in private practice. In 2010, Dickerson joined the Institute for Free Speech as an attorney. He was promoted to Legal Director in 2011, a position he held for nearly a decade. During his tenure, he worked on litigation, legal advocacy, and policy issues related to free speech, political participation, campaign finance regulation, and constitutional law. In December 2020, Dickerson was appointed Commissioner of the Federal Election Commission, the independent federal agency responsible for administering and enforcing U.S. campaign finance law. He served as Vice Chair in 2021 and Chair in 2022, helping oversee the agency’s regulatory, enforcement, and administrative responsibilities. His term as commissioner concluded in April 2025.
