Career

Ren began his career as a Quantitative Researcher at Citadel, where he built infrastructure for oil and natural gas markets and worked with granular market data to inform trading decisions. He later joined Electric Capital as a software engineer, where he co-created Codeslaw, an open-source smart contract search tool used by security researchers, and developed Smart Contract Genealogy Analysis to study the evolution of smart contract code across EVM networks. He also co-authored research on the game theory of Bitcoin's consensus mechanism and contributed to the Bitcoin Consensus Analysis Project, while developing internal systems for monitoring liquidity and developer activity across blockchain ecosystems. In October 2025, Ren became a General Partner on Electric Capital's investment team. His work has included technical and market analyses of blockchain protocols, with a focus on market microstructure, validator incentives, liquidity, execution pathways, governance, and cross-domain composability. Extractive L2s

In a November 2024 presentation at Devcon SEA, Ren Crypto Fish examined the economic relationship between Ethereum and Layer 2 networks, focusing on whether L2s were extractive toward Ethereum through fee structures, ETH usage, and blob space demand. He discussed how low demand for blob space was influenced by the design of the blob fee market rather than deliberate avoidance by L2s, while noting that L2 activity had contributed to the use of ETH as an asset even as its role as a gas token remained comparatively limited. The presentation considered possible future scenarios involving higher Ethereum fees, dominant L2s, changes in blob pricing, and shifting token incentives, and argued that the economic relationship between Ethereum and its L2s would depend on how these technical and market conditions developed. During the Q&A, Ren addressed the suitability of EIP-1559 for blob fees, the potential isolation of L2 tokens, sources of demand for Ethereum's base layer, and the risks associated with L2 market concentration. He presented data showing rapid growth in L2 contract deployments, substantial numbers of developers deploying across multiple chains, and higher gas usage, event emissions, and cross-contract interactions on L2s. Analysis of method signatures, bytecode, and code embeddings indicated that L2 contracts contained significant amounts of code that differed from Ethereum L1 contracts, with the lower costs of L2s enabling more computationally intensive applications and more complex contract designs. He also discussed ongoing research into contract control flows, events, opcodes, and classification methods, including the use of overlapping code chunks to analyze large contracts within the limitations of LLM context.
