During his tenure, he advised issuers across Korea and Southeast Asia on international bond offerings and capital markets transactions, with a particular focus on debt financing and high-yield markets.

In 2009, Gwak joined Woori Investment & Securities as Director of Global Markets in Singapore, where he worked on proprietary trading strategies focused on Korean fixed-income securities. Alongside his leadership role at Standard Chartered, Gwak led Project Liberty through SC Ventures between 2019 and 2022, an internal venture focused on expanding access to bond markets through blockchain technology and tokenization. The initiative participated in several proof-of-concept projects involving tokenized bonds, including collaborations with financial institutions and central banking organizations exploring digital infrastructure for fixed-income markets.

Interviews

Finance Without Banks

In a May 2025 interview on Nicole Lee’s You Never Know podcast, Gwak discussed his personal background, career in traditional finance, and vision for blockchain-based financial infrastructure. Gwak reflected on his upbringing in Ghana and Korea, describing how his multicultural experiences shaped his resilience, global outlook, and interest in entrepreneurship. He discussed his early ventures, including startup and gaming projects, before moving into finance roles at UBS and Standard Chartered, where he gained experience in bond markets and identified challenges that limited access to fixed-income products for everyday investors. Gwak explained that his work in blockchain and tokenization was driven by the goal of making capital markets more accessible by simplifying bond issuance, reducing unnecessary intermediaries, and combining legal protections with digital asset technology. He emphasized the importance of building trust, maintaining user ownership of assets, and developing Web3 solutions focused on practical applications and broader financial inclusion. [5]

Tokenization

In a December 2024 interview on the On The Block podcast, Gwak discussed the development of tokenization, blockchain infrastructure, and the future of digital assets alongside Marcus from Symphony Digital Assets. The discussion explored the evolution of financial instruments such as bonds, emphasizing how traditional markets rely on trust, custody arrangements, and intermediaries to facilitate transactions. Gwak highlighted the role of legal structures, including master trusts, in supporting tokenized assets and explained how blockchain technology could improve accessibility and reduce reliance on traditional intermediaries. The conversation also examined Ethereum’s position as a leading network for tokenized assets, citing its developer ecosystem, network effects, and continued evolution, while considering the role of private blockchains. The speakers concluded by discussing the long-term potential of tokenization, predicting that on-chain assets could represent a significant portion of global financial markets by 2030. [6]

Presentations

Libeara

In a May 2024 presentation at the Fintech Worldcup, Gwak discussed Libeara’s focus on using tokenization to improve access to real-world assets and expand participation in financial markets. Gwak explained that traditional securities infrastructure was often complex and difficult for individuals to navigate, limiting access to products such as government bonds. He outlined Libeara’s approach of tokenizing regulated funds and securities to make ownership, transfer, and distribution more accessible, while enabling governments and institutions to connect more directly with investors. Gwak highlighted the team’s experience across government bond issuance, consumer finance, and technology, as well as proof-of-concept initiatives including a tokenized Singapore government bond fund rated by Moody’s. He also emphasized the importance of operating on public blockchain networks to ensure tokenization benefits individual investors alongside institutions and supports broader financial inclusion. [4]
