Interviews

Evolution of DeFi

At the WILD3 Conference in April 2022, John Ge discussed the development of decentralized finance (DeFi), describing it as a system of blockchain-based protocols and smart contracts that enable financial activities such as trading, borrowing, and earning yield. He discussed the potential for DeFi and crypto-based financial services to become more widely adopted, with the expansion of asset types and financial rights as areas of development. Ge also noted that DeFi could enable financial products based on assets that had previously lacked financial applications, potentially expanding access in regions with limited financial infrastructure. Ge identified user experience, established brands, and regulatory approaches as factors that could influence DeFi adoption. He suggested that regulation could focus on companies and service providers rather than directly regulating decentralized protocols, while banks and other traditional financial institutions could gradually incorporate DeFi-related services in response to customer demand. He also discussed the relationship between decentralized protocols and centralized services, emphasizing transparency and user choice rather than treating decentralization as an absolute requirement for all financial applications. Restoring Market Confidence

In an August 2022 interview with TechCrunch, Ge discussed the turmoil in the cryptocurrency market following the collapse of Three Arrows Capital (3AC). He attributed the downturn partly to crypto firms operating with opaque business models, inadequate transparency around the use of borrowed funds, and conflicts arising when asset managers also engaged in proprietary trading. Ge argued that firms should clearly disclose risks and maintain appropriate controls, while noting that even conservative investment strategies could result in losses. Ge also discussed regulation and investor confidence, arguing that regulators could strengthen oversight of consumer-facing crypto products and retail investor protections, but that institution-focused asset managers required more specialized approaches because regulation often lagged behind industry developments. He said Matrixport had relatively limited exposure to 3AC compared with its equity and had filed a creditor claim following the fund's collapse. Ge also stated that Matrixport's plans to pursue a public listing remained unchanged, with the United States considered a potential market. [4]
