Born in South Korea, Shin moved to rural Washington, D.C., with his folks when he was 9. He attended magnet secondary school and got into the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, where he studied finance and marketing. Shin was a business visionary on the most fundamental level, having begun two organizations while still in school. The initial, a site for understudies searching for lodging, flopped hopelessly.
