Pei Sun began his career at Google as a Software Engineer, working there from 2011 to 2016. Following his time at Google, he worked as a Software Engineer at Alluxio, Inc. from 2016 to 2017. In 2017, he moved to Waymo, Google's self-driving car project, where he served as a Senior Staff Research Scientist until 2023. During his tenure at Waymo, he was involved in creating the last two generations of the company's perception models, which are critical for autonomous vehicle navigation and understanding their environment. In 2023, he transitioned to Google DeepMind as a Senior Staff Software Engineer, focusing on areas such as post-training, coding, and reasoning for the Gemini models. In June 2025, it was announced that Sun was joining Meta Superintelligence Labs, a new unit established by Mark Zuckerberg to consolidate Meta's foundation model teams and accelerate the development of artificial general intelligence.
