Steffen Cruz is a London-based technology entrepreneur and executive best known as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Co‑Founder of Macrocosmos, a company developing infrastructure described as an “OS” for large‑scale, AI‑native applications. [1] [2] [3]
Steffen Cruz studied physics at the University of Birmingham, where he completed an integrated Master of Science (MSci) degree between 2008 and 2012. He later pursued doctoral studies at The University of British Columbia, earning a Ph.D. in Experimental Nuclear Physics from 2012 to 2017. [3]
Steffen Cruz has built a career spanning machine learning, artificial intelligence, and experimental physics. In 2024, he co-founded Macrocosmos, where he serves as Chief Technology Officer, contributing to the development of a technology platform focused on large-scale computational systems. Prior to this, he was associated with the Opentensor Foundation, where he worked as a senior machine learning engineer before being appointed Chief Technology Officer between 2023 and 2024, contributing to the advancement of decentralized machine learning infrastructure.
Earlier, Cruz spent over four years at Solid State AI in Toronto, where he initially worked as a quantum machine learning developer and later advanced to the role of machine learning lead. His work during this period involved developing and applying machine learning models, including those related to quantum computing and advanced data systems. In 2018, he also worked independently as a freelance data scientist and machine learning engineer, undertaking various projects across applied AI and analytics.
Following the completion of his doctoral studies, Cruz briefly served as a postdoctoral researcher at TRIUMF in Vancouver, where he conducted data analysis and contributed to academic publications in experimental physics. Concurrently with his Ph.D., he worked as a teaching assistant at The University of British Columbia from 2012 to 2017, where he led tutorials and laboratory sessions and supported undergraduate physics instruction.
