Ruoming Pang is an engineer known for his work in artificial intelligence and large language models, having held significant roles at Google and Apple. In July 2025 he joined the Meta Superintelligence Team in researching AI. [2]
Ruoming Pang spent approximately 15 years at Google, where he served as a principal software engineer. In this role, he oversaw foundational systems across the company. During his tenure at Google Brain, he co-led the development of the Babelfish/Lingvo deep learning framework, which was part of the speech recognition efforts. He also contributed to the development of Tacotron 2. Between 2012 and 2017, Pang co-founded Google's global authorization system known as Zanzibar and was its sole technical lead. Additionally, he co-developed a search system built on Bigtable that was subsequently adopted by over 1,000 projects within Google. [1]
In 2021, Pang left Google parent company Alphabet to join Apple. At Apple, he was a key executive overseeing the development of the AI foundational models team. He supervised a team of over 100 engineers focused on creating AI models for applications like Siri and other on-device features. His team was considered pivotal to Apple's overall AI strategy. [1]
In July 2025, Pang departed Apple to join Meta Platforms' artificial superintelligence unit. This move occurred amidst significant competition for AI talent among major technology companies. At Meta, Pang joined a group that includes other AI researchers recently recruited from competing firms. [1]
Ruoming Pang earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Princeton University (2000–2006). He previously completed a Master's degree in Computer Science at the University of Southern California (1998–2000) and obtained a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Shanghai Jiao Tong University (1995–1998).
