Steven McClurg is an American entrepreneur and investment executive known for his work in both traditional finance and the digital asset industry. He is the founder and CEO of Canary Capital, a macro-driven investment firm specializing in digital assets. McClurg gained prominence as the co-founder and Chief Investment Officer of Valkyrie Funds, where he was instrumental in launching one of the first spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States and managed the top-performing ETF of 2023. Steven McClurg completed graduate studies at Pepperdine University, earning a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in finance from the Graziadio School of Business and Management. He also obtained a master’s degree in communication from Pepperdine University. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Angelo State University. [4]
Steven McClurg’s career spans traditional finance, technology, and digital asset management. He began in corporate finance and strategic planning roles at companies including Electronic Arts and Youbet.com, followed by senior positions at Guggenheim Partners, where he served as Managing Director and was responsible for portfolio construction across fixed income, alternatives, and private equity strategies. He also held executive roles at Crowdfunder.com and advisory or board positions with early-stage technology firms.
McClurg later moved into entrepreneurial and digital asset–focused ventures. He founded Arca and THESEUS Capital, the latter of which was acquired by Galaxy Digital, where he subsequently served as a Managing Director supporting the development of asset management and public funds initiatives. He also co-founded Basquet and acted as an advisor to several financial technology companies.
From 2020 to 2024, McClurg was Co-Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Valkyrie, a digital asset management firm, where he oversaw investment strategy and product development.
