Nikolai Durov

Nikolai Durov (born 21 November 1980 in Leningrad, Soviet Union^[3]) is a Russian programmer and mathematician, co‑founder of the social networking site VK^[2] and later Telegram Messenger,^[1] an encrypted messaging application. He is the founder and original architect of The Open Network (TON) and a researcher in algebraic geometry and homotopy theory.^[3][8]

He is the elder brother of Pavel Durov.

Early Life & Education

Nikolai Durov is the brother of Pavel Durov and the son of Valery Durov, a Doctor of Philological Sciences and a professor of philology during Nikolai's time at Saint Petersburg State University.^[3]

He won gold at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in the 3 years he participated; 1996, 1997, and 1998. He accrued 3 silver medals and 1 gold medal in the International Olympiad in Informatics from 1995 through 1998. He also was a member of the Saint Petersburg State University ACM team, which won the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest in 2000 and 2001.^{[12][4][5][6]}

He received his first Ph.D. in mathematics from Saint Petersburg State University in 2005 with his thesis "New Approach to Arakelov Geometry". Continuing at the University of Bonn, he obtained a second Ph.D. in mathematics under the supervision of Gerd Faltings with his thesis on singular Arakelov geometry in 2007, giving him two doctoral degrees in the field.^[7][3][8]

Career

Nikolai Durov is a mathematician and software engineer who has held senior technical roles in large-scale online platforms. He co-founded VK (VKontakte) in 2006 and worked as the platform’s lead developer and director of engineering until 2013, overseeing its core technical architecture. In 2013 he co-founded Telegram, where he has served as principal technical architect, focusing on the design of its communication protocols and infrastructure.^{[3][14][18][10]}

Alongside his industry work, Durov is a senior research fellow at the Laboratory of Algebra and Number Theory at the St Petersburg Department of the Steklov Institute of Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, where his research centers on algebraic and arithmetic geometry.^[9]

Research

Nikolai Durov introduced commutative algebraic monads as a generalization of local objects in a generalized algebraic geometry. Versions of tropical geometry, absolute geometry over a field with one element, and an algebraic analog of Arakelov geometry were realized in this setup.^[8]

He holds the position of senior research fellow at the Laboratory of Algebra and Number Theory at the St Petersburg Department of Steklov Institute of Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.^[9]

Technology

VK and Telegram

Nikolai Durov was the lead developer and director of engineering of the VK (VKontakte) team until 2013, where he was responsible for creating and managing the platform’s technical architecture.^[3][14]

Together with his brother Pavel Durov, Nikolai co-founded Telegram in 2013. He designed the MTProto protocol, a custom encryption protocol that became the foundation of Telegram's security, and contributed to much of the service’s core infrastructure. Pavel Durov has led the company’s business and public-facing activities, while Nikolai has focused on its technical design.^[1][14]

The Open Network (TON)

Durov is the co-founder of The Open Network (TON) and the author of the original TON whitepaper, which outlined the blockchain platform's technical design and features.^[13] He designed the TON Virtual Machine (TVM) and the Fift programming language used for smart contracts and low-level interaction with the network.^[13]

Telegram’s 2018–2020 TON/Gram token sale was halted following a lawsuit by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, after which Telegram settled with the SEC in 2020 and withdrew from the project.^[14] TON has since continued as an independent, open‑source, community-driven network, maintained by the TON Foundation while retaining Durov’s original architectural design.^[14]

Artificial Intelligence Project

In June 2025, it was reported that Nikolai Durov was developing a new artificial intelligence system. According to his brother Pavel, the project aims to create a “real AI” focused on logical reasoning and understanding of the world, rather than relying on the pattern‑matching approach of existing large language models that mimic human text. Pavel stated that Nikolai has not been involved in Telegram’s operational activities for many years and has instead concentrated on fundamental research, including work on infinitely scalable blockchain architectures.^[15][16][17]

Controversy with French Authorities

On 25 March 2024, French authorities issued arrest warrants for both Nikolai’s brother Pavel Durov and Nikolai himself, as part of a wider investigation into alleged criminal use of Telegram, including the distribution of child sexual abuse material, and what prosecutors described as the platform’s “almost non‑existent cooperation” with law enforcement.^[19][10]

On 24 August 2024, Pavel Durov was arrested in Paris upon arrival into the country. Following his arrest, he was indicted on several charges linked to alleged illegal conduct by Telegram users and the platform’s purported failure to adequately respond to judicial requests, and he was placed under judicial control.^[19][10]

Politico reported that an arrest warrant had also been issued for Nikolai Durov in the same case, but his whereabouts were unclear as of the reporting. Media coverage has stressed that there is no suggestion that either brother personally produced the illegal content at issue; instead, the investigation focuses on allegations that Telegram failed to cooperate sufficiently with law‑enforcement and judicial authorities.^[19][18]

The international community, including the United Arab Emirate’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has shown interest and said in a statement that it was “closely following” Pavel Durov’s case and that it had “submitted a request to the French government to provide him with all consular services urgently”, the reason being that Pavel Durov is a citizen of the country.^[11]

“Caring for citizens, preserving their interests, following up on their affairs, and providing them with all aspects of care are a top priority for the UAE,” the ministry said^[11]
