Payward
Payward is a privately held financial infrastructure company that operates the parent organization behind the cryptocurrency exchange Kraken and a broader portfolio of financial products spanning trading, custody, payments, lending, onchain finance, and market benchmarks.[1]
Overview
Founded in 2011 and headquartered in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the company describes its mission as building "the world's open financial system." [2] Rather than operating each brand as an independent stack, the company states that all of its products draw on a common set of shared systems: one global liquidity pool, one unified risk and margin engine, one collateral and settlement system, and one compliance and licensing framework.[2] The company frames these products as one interoperable stack connecting crypto, tokenized assets, and traditional markets using shared systems and liquidity.[1]
According to Payward, this shared foundation allows customers to hold, trade, earn, pay, and invest across asset classes without the fragmentation that would result from separate platforms.[2] The company asserts that the model lets it launch new products at low marginal cost and enter diverse global markets while maintaining consistent risk management and regulatory integrity, describing this as a "speed to market" advantage.[1]
Products
Payward provides the infrastructure layer behind Kraken, its cryptocurrency exchange, and a set of additional products aimed at different segments of trading and finance.[2] NinjaTrader is a trading brand within the portfolio, and Breakout, Payward Services, and CF Benchmarks are further product lines cited by the company.[1] Payward Services operates as the company's business-to-business arm, and CF Benchmarks produces market indices, including two new crypto indices highlighted in the company's own reporting.[2][3]
A significant part of Payward's product strategy centers on xStocks, its tokenized-equities offering that brings shares of listed companies onchain. The company describes xStocks as providing 24/7, programmable onchain access to equities for investors in more than 110 countries.[3] Payward Prime, referenced as Kraken Prime, serves as an institutional order-routing and prime-brokerage layer used in some of its partnerships.[3]
History and Acquisitions
Payward was established in 2011 and grew from the operator of the Kraken exchange into a broader parent company for a family of financial products.[2] Its expansion has been driven in part by acquisitions that added technology and capabilities across payments, tokenization, wallets, and derivatives. The company has acquired Reap, Magna, the embedded-wallet business of Magic Labs, and Bitnomial.[2]
The Reap acquisition was tied to the company's ambitions in business-to-business payments, with Co-CEO Arjun Sethi framing it in terms of the future of B2B payments.[2] Magna was integrated into the group and rebranded as being powered by Kraken.[2] In July 2026 the company acquired Magic Wallet, adding the technology behind roughly 60 million wallets to its infrastructure.[2]
Payward has also advanced its banking ambitions through Kraken Financial, its Wyoming-chartered bank. In March 2026 the company reported that Kraken Financial had been granted a Federal Reserve master account, asserting it was the first digital asset bank in U.S. history to receive one.[2] By August 2026, coverage indicated the company was exploring banking, trading, and asset-management services outside the United States and was moving toward full bank status.[2]
Governance
Payward maintains formal oversight structures and corporate policies intended to support regulated growth across jurisdictions, products, and customer types.[1] The company states its governance model is designed to ensure strategic oversight, risk management, and operational accountability across a portfolio operating in multiple regulated categories, and to scale accountability, risk management, and transparency.[4]
