Introduction

Orb is a Web3 social mobile application built on the Lens Protocol, aimed at fostering tokenized communities known as Clubs, offering collectible posts, sticker packs, and native creator tipping mechanisms to engage users. The platform was conceived by Kimmo Sirén, Nilesh Rathore, and Alireza Mohammadrezabeig in June 2022. Although originally conceptualized as a Web3 version of LinkedIn, it pivoted to emphasize community engagement and personal expression in late 2022. ^[2] By early 2025, Orb reached over 50,000 monthly active users. ^[3]

History

Orb began as a side project during Graph Day in San Francisco in June 2022. Initially, it was intended to be a Web3 analog of LinkedIn, focusing on professional networking powered by on-chain credentials. However, after evaluating the potential for a broader community-centered social platform, the team shifted focus in November 2022. This change steered the development into a full-time endeavor, resulting in the creation of a decentralized social platform emphasizing personal interaction and community-driven content. ^[2]

By September 2023, Orb had secured $2.3 million in a pre-seed funding round. Investors included Superscrypt, Founders Inc., Foresight Ventures, and Aave Companies, as well as Stani Kulechov (founder of Aave and Lens Protocol) and Sandeep Nailwal (co-founder of Polygon). Orb co-founder Kimmo Sirén told The Block that the round had no lead investor and was an equity round that began in March 2023 and closed in May 2023; he declined to comment on valuation. ^[2]

Features and Functionality

Orb's primary features are designed to enhance user experience and engagement. Its foundational components include tokenized communities, known as Clubs, that allow users to form micro-networks with treasury and governance capabilities, thus encouraging self-expression and community participation through digital ownership. ^[3]

A feature of Orb is its chat functionality, facilitating direct communication between users, thereby enhancing personal interaction within the platform. Additionally, collectible posts serve as a creative outlet for users, allowing creators to share and monetize their content through interactive and rewarding experiences. ^[1]

Another feature is the integration of sticker packs, which have become popular due to their virality and ease of use within the application. These stickers encourage playful and expressive modes of communication reminiscent of early internet culture yet powered by modern blockchain technology. ^[3]

Orb also supports native tipping, providing a financial mechanism for content creators and allowing users to support creators directly within the platform. ^[2]

Acquisition by MaskDAO

In 2025, Orb became a part of MaskDAO, the decentralized collective governed by Mask Network, a leading player in decentralized social networking. This acquisition sparked significant interest due to conflicting reports on its exact timing. Mask Network's announcement, dated December 17, 2025, contrasts with independent reports claiming the finalization occurred between May 30 and June 2, 2025. ^[3]

Following the acquisition, Orb underwent a migration to Lens Chain, a blockchain developed by the Lens/Avara team, aligning it more closely with the technical ecosystem envisioned by MaskDAO. ^[3] Kimmo Sirén was appointed as the Head of Orb Product at MaskDAO, further integrating the original founders into the organizational structure and vision of Mask Network. ^[3]

Technology and Infrastructure

Orb is built on the Lens Protocol, offering decentralized social networking tools enabled by blockchain technology. ^[3]

The platform employs ERC-6551, a standard enabling sophisticated token interaction by allowing each NFT to possess its ERC-4337 smart contract wallet for holding other tokens. This concept underpins Orb's communities, facilitating a new dimension of digital ownership and interaction among users. ^[2]
