Patrick Sutton
Patrick Sutton is an American strategic communications professional who has worked in cryptocurrency communications since 2014. In June 2026 he announced that he was joining Andreessen Horowitz as a Communications Partner for its crypto division, a16z crypto, where he works closely with portfolio companies and investing partners on communications strategy.[1][2]
Education
Sutton earned a Bachelor's degree in Journalism and Mass Communications from the University of South Carolina, based in Columbia, South Carolina, graduating Magna Cum Laude.[2]
Career
Sutton entered cryptocurrency communications in 2014. His work has spanned exchanges, wallets, institutions, DeFi, policy, and layer-1 and layer-2 blockchain ecosystems—the base blockchains and the scaling networks built on top of them.[1]
Earlier in his career, Sutton built the communications function at Avalanche and its developer, Ava Labs, joining as one of the first 20 employees.[1] In this role Sutton served as Director of Communications, working on the network's public relations, media, and editorial strategy.[2]
His time at Ava Labs included direct involvement in recruiting and platform promotion. In September 2020 he publicly sought an experienced infrastructure and DevOps engineer to join the Avalanche project, signaling the company's early-stage hiring push.[2] In March 2022 he highlighted the launch of the Try Your Best project on Avalanche, noting that the team had chosen the network over others for its energy efficiency in bringing Web3 applications to a broader audience.[2]
Sutton subsequently joined Kraken, the cryptocurrency exchange, where he worked on launching a range of products, markets, and policy initiatives.[1] His communications work there intersected with the institutional side of the crypto market. In June 2024 he publicly praised a DL News feature covering CF Benchmarks, its chief executive Sui Chung, and the role that Kraken's institutional arm played in the crypto exchange-traded fund (ETF) markets. On June 4, 2026, Sutton announced that he was joining Andreessen Horowitz as Communications Partner for a16z crypto, the venture firm's dedicated cryptocurrency practice. He described the move as gratifying, citing his admiration for the a16z team and the opportunity to work with the partners and founders building "what comes next."[2][3]
In the role he works closely with portfolio companies and investing partners on communications strategy, helping teams launch products and networks, navigate challenges, and tell clearer stories around new ideas.[1]
