Early Life & Education

Willy Woo was born in Hong Kong and later moved to New Zealand. He started his career in tech, developing mobile apps before the iPhone. After exiting several startups, he became a stock trader and invested in gold during the 2008 financial crisis. ^[4]

In 2013-2014, he began acquiring Bitcoin, then started analyzing its blockchain data, coining its 'on-chain metrics'. His online sharing of these insights has earned him over 1.1 million followers on X, and he runs a popular paid newsletter, "The Bitcoin Forecast," on Substack. ^[3][4][5] On why he bought his first Bitcoin, Woo said on X:

"For me, I did a bunch of autistic maths in my head, realised if it broke $450k (Gold cap at the time) I would be pissed. So I bought 1 BTC to make sure I wouldn't be."^[6]

Career

Willy Woo was a Contributing Writer for CoinDesk and Forbes between 2016 - 2017. In 2019, he joined Adaptive Capital as an On-chain Advisor until March 2020 and in December 2020, he joined S2F Capital for the same role. In June 2021, he was the Head of Research for ChainLink Capital Management's Ama Fund, a diversified high-yield cash investment vehicle. ^[2]

The Bitcoin Forecast

In October 2020, Woo started a crypto newsletter on Substack called “The Bitcoin Forecast,” where he shares his cryptocurrency analysis and Bitcoin marketing intelligence. He also runs WooBull, a website where he researches and publishes detailed crypto market analyses. ^[3][5]

Woo is most well-known for his X account, which has more than one million followers. He shares his data-driven analysis of the crypto markets and price predictions for Bitcoin. ^[1]

In 2021, Woo introduced a new metric, dubbed the “Supply Shock” valuation model. It forensically clustered the Bitcoin wallet addresses into distinct investors and then classified their coins as illiquid, liquid, or highly liquid based on the historical behavior of the investor. He used the Supply Shock metric in his August 2021 analysis to correctly predict the BTC price rally to $55,000. ^[7]

On March 14, 2024, Willy Woo presented a bold forecast for BTC's value in a situation where it becomes the primary global currency. He speculates that Bitcoin could potentially reach $4.8 million in a hyperbitcoinization event. This scenario envisions Bitcoin eclipsing traditional currencies and commodities as the main medium of exchange worldwide. Hyperbitcoinization is the proposition that Bitcoin will outcompete traditional financial systems and fiat currencies, becoming the global standard for monetary transactions. ^[8]

CMCC Crest

In January 2022, Willy Woo joined CMCC Crest Yield and serves as a Managing Partner for the company. Crest is the liquid alternatives business arm of CMCC, Asia's most established crypto asset manager. ^[1][2]

Its premier product, SyzCrest Digital Uncorrelated, is managed in partnership with Syz Banking Group, a boutique private bank in Switzerland. Crest also runs Crest Fund, a liquid absolute return fund seeking uncorrelated returns and higher on the risk curve than its institutional offering.
