Ren Crypto Fish

Ren Crypto Fish is a pseudonymous General Partner at , where he focuses on investments in and infrastructure. He joined as a software engineer and has worked across security, protocol analysis, developer activity, and on-chain market infrastructure, following an earlier career as a Quantitative Researcher at Citadel. [2]

Career

Ren began his career as a Quantitative Researcher at Citadel, where he built infrastructure for oil and natural gas markets and worked with granular market data to inform trading decisions. He later joined as a software engineer, where he co-created Codeslaw, an open-source search tool used by security researchers, and developed Smart Contract Genealogy Analysis to study the evolution of code across networks. He also co-authored research on the game theory of Bitcoin's consensus mechanism and contributed to the Consensus Analysis Project, while developing internal systems for monitoring liquidity and developer activity across ecosystems. In October 2025, Ren became a General Partner on investment team. His work has included technical and market analyses of protocols, with a focus on market microstructure, validator incentives, liquidity, execution pathways, governance, and cross-domain composability. He has been involved in investments in , , Unto, Ellipsis, Kuru, and Asula, among others. [3] [4] [8]

Presentations

Extractive L2s

In a November 2024 presentation at SEA, Ren Crypto Fish examined the economic relationship between and networks, focusing on whether were extractive toward through fee structures, usage, and blob space demand. He discussed how low demand for blob space was influenced by the design of the blob fee market rather than deliberate avoidance by , while noting that activity had contributed to the use of as an asset even as its role as a token remained comparatively limited. The presentation considered possible future scenarios involving higher fees, dominant , changes in blob pricing, and shifting token incentives, and argued that the economic relationship between and its would depend on how these technical and market conditions developed. During the Q&A, Ren addressed the suitability of EIP-1559 for blob fees, the potential isolation of tokens, sources of demand for base layer, and the risks associated with market concentration. [6]

L2 Deployed Contracts

In a November 2023 presentation at Devconnect, Ren Crypto Fish analyzed smart contract activity across and networks, focusing on whether were generating new forms of on-chain code rather than simply replicating activity from . He presented data showing rapid growth in contract deployments, substantial numbers of developers deploying across multiple chains, and higher usage, event emissions, and cross-contract interactions on . Analysis of method signatures, bytecode, and code embeddings indicated that contracts contained significant amounts of code that differed from contracts, with the lower costs of enabling more computationally intensive applications and more complex contract designs. He also discussed ongoing research into contract control flows, events, opcodes, and classification methods, including the use of overlapping code chunks to analyze large contracts within the limitations of LLM context.
