Overview

Freename is a Swiss-based decentralized domain platform with multi-chain compatibility. It is the first Web3 namespace to be accredited by ICANN. The platform provides Web3 domains for multiple blockchains, including Polygon, Base, Aurora, Binance Smart Chain, and Cronos, enabling simplified transactions and access to websites and dApps. Users can link domains to smart contracts, Metaverse assets, and wallet addresses, replacing complex blockchain identifiers with human-readable names.

Freename domains function as NFTs and follow ERC-721 standards, allowing integration with apps and crypto marketplaces. Built on Freename Smart Contracts, these domains are censorship-resistant and designed for enhanced security and privacy. They convert machine-readable identifiers such as wallet addresses and content hashes into readable names.

The platform offers a "Reverse Resolution" feature, enabling users to associate metadata with blockchain addresses. Domains can be minted on various blockchains and traded on marketplaces like OpenSea and Rarible. Additional features include a Web3 website builder, Web3 email services, video conferencing, survey tools, and browser extensions. Users can also earn royalties by owning a top-level domain. ^[4]

Technical Infrastructure

Freename Contracts

Freename's smart contracts are divided into three categories: ^{[4] [5]}

• FNS Registry Contract: The FNS Registry Contract stores records of all Freename domains and allows users to manage their domains by setting records and delegating management. It follows the OpenZeppelin ERC-721 Enumerable Metadata token standard, meaning domains are stored as NFTs with unique metadata such as crypto addresses, IPFS hashes, and avatars. The contract maintains data including registered domain names (as name hashes), owner and operator addresses, approved domain addresses, key-value records, and whitelisted minters.
• Proxy Admin Contract: This contract enables upgrades to the FNS Registry Contract. The admin account is restricted to administrative actions such as upgrading the proxy and changing the admin.
• Minting Manager Contract: The Minting Manager Contract controls the minting of Top-Level and Second-Level Domains. It provides an interface for the Freename team to mint domains within a limited scope, forwarding all calls to the ENSRegistry contract.

Web3 Domain Resolver

The Web3 Domain Resolver converts machine-readable addresses into domain names. General-purpose resolver options are available for users with basic needs. At the same time, developers in the Freename ecosystem can use it to manage and resolve domains from providers such as Unstoppable Domains, ENS, and Freename. The GitHub library includes domain and TLD resolution, token ID resolution, reverse resolution from wallet addresses, domain ownership transfer, and managing records. ^[6]

WHOIS

Freename’s WHOIS Explorer is a Web3 domain lookup tool that provides decentralized domain ownership details and historical records. Users can verify domain ownership, check wallet addresses linked to Web3 domains, and determine the registration status of top-level domains (TLDs). The tool is integrated with multiple blockchain networks, including Polygon, Aurora, Cronos, BSC, BASE, and Solana. It supports domains from Freename, ENS, and Unstoppable Domains.

WHOIS enhances security and transparency by helping users confirm domain legitimacy before transactions. It also supports due diligence for domain sales, assists in identifying similar domain names, and aids in trademark protection by allowing businesses to track unauthorized use of their brand names. The tool provides historical data on domains, helping users manage digital assets and prevent cybersquatting. ^[7]

Freename Custody

Freename Custody is a tool for managing and integrating Web3 domains with traditional web browsers. It allows users to import Unstoppable Domains (UD) and Base domains, making them accessible on browsers like Chrome and Safari without additional setup. The tool enables users to host websites on their Web3 domains and configure DNS settings for easier site management. It also supports Web2 accessibility, allowing Web3 domains to function like traditional web addresses. Domains purchased from external platforms can be transferred to Freename Custody, provided they are minted on supported blockchains, including Aurora, Binance Smart Chain (BSC), Polygon, and Base. ^[8]

Freename DAO

Freename has a Community Roadmap where members can provide feedback and suggestions. The Open Pipeline project allows users to submit proposals, vote, or comment on existing ideas. Proposal statuses are categorized as Under Review, Planned, In Progress, or Completed.
