Sebastien Borget is the co-founder and Global Ambassador of The Sandbox, a Web3 gaming and metaverse platform that uses non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and its SAND utility token. He is also the co-founder of ArtVerse, a digital art gallery in Paris, and serves as president of the Blockchain Game Alliance (BGA). Since August 2025 he has represented The Sandbox worldwide as its Global Ambassador after previously serving as its Chief Operating Officer.[1][2]
Sebastien Borget pursued his education in computer systems networking and telecommunications. In 2004, he enrolled in Télécom SudParis and obtained his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Computer Systems Networking and Telecommunications in 2007. Prior to that, he completed his Master's degree in Computer Systems Networking and Telecommunications from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2006.[1]
In addition to his work on The Sandbox, Borget co-founded the NFT Factory in Paris and helped found the Open Metaverse Alliance (OMA3), initiatives aimed at promoting open, interoperable standards for NFTs and virtual worlds.[10][11] Through these organizations he has advocated for technical and governance frameworks that enable users to move digital assets and identities across different metaverse platforms.
In August 2018, Sebastien Borget expanded his blockchain gaming industry career by becoming a co-founder and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of The Sandbox, a virtual world platform where players can create their own voxel-based games on the Ethereum blockchain. He helped oversee the platform's development, operations, and partnerships as it grew into a large Web3 ecosystem with more than 6.3 million user accounts with connected crypto wallets, over 400 brand partnerships, and more than 1,500 user-generated games.[12] In 2021, The Sandbox completed a Series B funding round led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2.[12][2][5]
Borget has argued that the metaverse will become part of everyday life for many people, who will use it to express themselves and take part in a wide range of activities.[5]
According to Borget's LinkedIn announcement and an EGamers report, in June 2026 The Sandbox introduced The Sandbox Studio, described as an AI-native game engine that turns text prompts into playable multiplayer games.[8][9] The project entered an initial testing phase with a small group of creators ahead of a planned wider public launch in late 2026, extending The Sandbox's focus on user-generated content by lowering the technical barriers to building interactive experiences.[8][9]
Borget has stated that he and The Sandbox team aim to expand further into VR and AR to make the virtual world accessible through additional devices in the future.[6]
“We aim to make The Sandbox as accessible as possible to everyone. We started with PC and Mac, and because of accessibility, we will begin on mobile next. Then afterward, we’re keen to explore other more immersive ways to interact on a 2d screen showing 3d content in AR and VR, which would require additional experiments.“
Sebastien Borget placed 78th in The Cointelegraph Top 100 in 2021, after recognizing his efforts for The Sandbox and also being named President of the Blockchain Game Alliance in 2020.[4]
In 2022, Cointelegraph ranked Borget #4 in its Top 100 people in crypto and blockchain, up from #78 in 2021, and The Sandbox was included in Time's TIME100 Most Influential Companies of 2022 list for its role in the development of virtual worlds and digital ownership.[5][13][14]
